How To Make Moroccan Mint Tea

The Timeless Tradition of Moroccan Mint Tea

Even though it is served hot, Moroccans enjoy it throughout the entire day. It’s a traditional custom to finalize purchases and agreements with a glass of tea. Leaving a home or a restaurant without indulging in a cup is nearly unheard of. Such a delightful tradition!

Interestingly, the green tea, often referred to as gunpowder tea, that Moroccans favor is actually imported from China. In fact, Morocco holds the title as the largest importer of Chinese green tea in the world.

In Belgium, this sweet and refreshing beverage is also gaining popularity. Here, fresh mint tea is increasingly becoming a staple item on many menus, establishing itself as a reliable choice for tea enthusiasts.

Moroccan mint tea: recipe

Moroccan mint tea is prepared very easily. What do you need ?
– 1 liter of boiling water
– 1 bunch of fresh mint
– Semolina sugar at your convenience
– 1/2 tablespoon gunpowder (green tea)

Pour the green tea leaves into a teapot and add freshly boiled water. Allow the tea to infuse briefly before discarding the first brew, which helps eliminate the bitter notes commonly associated with gunpowder green tea. Prepare the tea once more in the same teapot, this time adding fresh mint leaves and sugar to taste. Pour in hot water and let the mixture steep for approximately five minutes, ensuring the flavors meld beautifully. Serve the tea when ready, ideally in elegant Moroccan glasses to enhance the traditional experience.

Serve Moroccan tea: some tips

When pouring tea, it is advisable to hold the teapot about half a meter above the glass. This technique ensures that a thin layer of foam forms on the surface of the tea, enhancing both its presentation and flavor.

Opt for some fresh, aromatic kinky mint to elevate your experience. The flavor profile of peppermint simply doesn’t match the unique taste found in Morocco.

Enhance your Moroccan tea ceremony experience by adding a delightful Moroccan biscuit. This sweet treat serves as the perfect complement to your delicious meal, elevating your culinary journey!
