What is a computer network?

Star topology:
In this scenario, there is a main hub or central node that facilitates connections to each individual computer within the network. This setup ensures that if an issue arises with a specific cable or connection, the remaining computers can still function normally without experiencing any interruptions. However, the downside of this configuration is that it necessitates a substantial amount of wiring to establish and maintain these connections effectively.
Bus topology:
In this scenario, every computer is linked through a single cable, forming a network. The data intended for the last computer must travel sequentially through each node along the way. A primary benefit of this setup is that it necessitates the least amount of wiring, making it simple and cost-effective. On the downside, if there is any issue or malfunction with the cable, it impacts all connected computers, potentially disrupting the entire network.
Ring Topology:
In this network topology, every computer is linked through a single cable, forming a continuous pathway. Additionally, the end nodes are interconnected, creating a loop. The signal traverses the network to locate and reach the intended recipient. If a network node is not set up properly or if another issue arises, the signal will repeatedly attempt to find its way to the target recipient, possibly causing delays or inefficiencies in the network communication.
Collapsed ring topology:
In this scenario, the central node functions as a network device, which may be a hub, router, or switch. This essential device operates in a ring configuration, featuring plugins designed specifically for cable connections. Moreover, every computer in the network is independently linked to the central device through its own dedicated cable, ensuring a direct and secure connection for each unit.
Each organization selects its preferred network topology to ensure efficient and seamless operation of its computer systems. After establishing connections between the computers, the workstations are equipped with individual cabling closets. These closets serve as designated areas housing a switch that links the computers to the broader network infrastructure.
